ACNE VS. ROSACEA
What is the difference between acne and rosacea? Many people think acne and rosacea are the the same thing but they are not. It is easy to confuse the two skin conditions since their appearance can be similar. Rosacea and acne need different methods of skin care. Knowing how to tell them apart will help you get the right treatment.
Acne is caused by the sebaceous glands making a larger than normal amount of oil. It occurs primarily during adolescent years when hormones are active. Acne is possible in adulthood due to hormonal changes, certain medications, and genetics. Breakouts may form on the face, back, buttocks, and chest. Pimples can be one of several types including blackheads, whiteheads, and cysts. Acne can be treated with cosmetic procedures, over-the-counter medicine, prescribed medicines and home remedies. With proper treatment, acne will disappear in a few weeks.
Rosacea is a skin condition that is characterized by constant flushing. Most people do not know they have it and maybe think it is a sunburn or just blushing. Rosacea effects around 16 million Americans and 45 million worldwide primarily of European or Irish descent. Symptoms are red or pinkish patches in the T-zone, broken blood vessels, small bumps, and irritated eyes. Rosacea is a long-term condition as opposed to acne and there is no known cure available. Repeated flushing may lead to little red bumps that look like acne. Blackheads and whiteheads can be removed by pore strips. However, the pimples associated with rosacea can not be removed by force. Contrary to acne, the condition will not go away in adulthood. In fact, adults between the ages of 30-50 are more commonly diagnosed with rosacea. Acne pimples are not as red as rosacea.
Rosacea and acne do have a few treatment methods in common. It is tempting to over-wash your face but doing so can worsen the condition by drying the skin. Apply a gentle cleanser twice a day. Make certain the products do not contain heavy perfumes or alcohol. Carefully study the ingredients list on the products. Products with along list of ingredients should be avoided.
Try to stay out of the sun as much as possible. The sun does not help skin with acne or rosacea. It may hide the problems temporarily but too much sun exposure from UV rays can redden the skin and cause premature aging. Studies show around 81%of those with rosacea named the sun as a trigger. Wear a sunscreen with a SPF of at least 30 if you must be out. The sun’s rays are stronger between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. so try to schedule activities before or after these hours. Green tea is beneficial skin care to both conditions. Drinking green tea makes you less prone to bumps. It can decrease redness used in cream form on the face.
This information should help you tell the difference between acne and rosacea. Natural treatment can give you temporarily relief from symptoms. If you aren’t for certain which condition you have, a doctor can make an accurate diagnosis.
